Your Dream Galveston Beach Wedding: Permit Guide
Are you dreaming of a beautiful beach wedding on Galveston Island? You’re in luck! Planning your special day on the stunning shores of the Gulf of Mexico is easier than you might think. In this guide, we’ll walk you through everything you need to know about beach wedding permits, so you can focus on what really matters—celebrating your love!
Good News! No Permit Needed for Most Weddings
The best part? For most beach weddings, you don’t need a permit at all! This means you can enjoy a simple ceremony without any extra hassle. Just imagine saying “I do” with your toes in the sand and the sound of waves in the background!
When Do You Need a Permit?
While you can have a simple ceremony without any hassle, there are some situations where you will need to obtain a permit. If you plan to:
Use a loudspeaker 🔊 (for music or announcements)
Rope off an area 🚧 (to create a private space)
Restrict public access 🚫 (to keep non-guests away)
Impact traffic flow 🚗 (by blocking roads or pathways)
Use designated areas at Stewart Beach, East Beach, or Seawolf Park
In these cases, it's essential to get the proper permits to ensure your wedding goes smoothly.
Park Board Beaches: Extra Special Spots!
Galveston’s public beaches are managed by the Galveston Park Board of Trustees. This includes popular spots like R.A. Apffel Park (East Beach), Stewart Beach, Dellanera RV Park, and the Seawall beaches between 10th and 61st streets. These locations offer special wedding venues with amenities like pavilions and reserved beachfront areas that make your ceremony even more memorable.
When you reserve a spot through the Park Board, you'll enjoy groomed beachfront areas roped off with decorative bollards, providing an unobstructed view of the Gulf. It’s the perfect way to celebrate your love while enjoying the beauty of nature!
Just Walk Down and Get Hitched!
If you prefer a laid-back approach, consider keeping it simple! You can have your guests meet at a nearby bar, restaurant, or beach pavilion before the ceremony and then walk down to the beach together when it's time to say "I do".
Just keep in mind:
There are no restrooms directly on the beach.
Access might be tricky for elderly or disabled guests.
Parking can be limited, so plan accordingly!
Big Party? Special Event Permit Time!
If you're planning a larger celebration with 75 or more guests, you'll need to apply for a Special Event Permit. Here's what you need to know:
You can apply as early as 180 days before your wedding.
Make sure to submit your application at least 75 days prior to your event.
Applications can be obtained at City Hall in the City Manager's office.
The Special Events Coordinator will help guide you through the permit process and ensure everything is in order for your big day.
